Pulitzer Prize winner to speak in Madison
MADISON – Jeff Gottlieb, the 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner for Public Service, will appear in Madison on Nov. 1 to discuss his work at an event sponsored by the Madison pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Gottlieb, a Los Angeles Times senior writer, and colleague Ruben Vives won the Pulitzer for their investigation into local government corruption in Bell, Calif. Their reporting won numerous other awards.
Gottlieb will discuss investigative reporting and how he and Vives uncovered the corruption at the SPJ meeting. All area journalists and members of the public are invited.
The discussion will take place at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the Paul Bunyan Room of the Memorial Union. The event is free. SPJ requests a $3 donation from non-members who attend.
Preceding the discussion, SPJ will hold a business meeting at 6 p.m.
SPJ is a national membership organization that promotes high professional and ethical standards among journalists, First Amendment principles and the belief that a free and vigorous press is vital in a representative democracy. The Madison professional chapter was formed in 1993; a UW-Madison chapter has been in existence for much of the past century. Membership costs $72 annually, and it is open to journalists who spend at least half of their professional life writing or editing work for publication or to journalism educators. Associate memberships are also available. ###
