SPJ-Madison and The Cap Times invite students to apply for the Pat Schneider Scholarship
The Madison Society of Professional Journalists is now accepting applications for three scholarships honoring the legacy of late Capital Times reporter Pat Schneider. The $1,200 scholarships will be awarded to female-identifying students attending UW-Madison, Edgewood College or Madison Area Technical College who demonstrate dedication to Schneider’s reporting values.
Eligible students must have completed two semesters at one of these colleges, have a declared major in journalism and demonstrate commitment to journalism and reporting on social justice.
Schneider, who passed away in September at age 65 after battling cancer, reported for the Cap Times for 25 years with a stern eye on holding powerful people and institutions accountable and amplifying the voices of the downtrodden.
The scholarship is funded through $1,600 in donations from the SPJ Holiday Party and Raffle as well as funding from SPJ Madison’s treasury and $2,000 from the Cap Times.
Applications for the scholarship can be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications require:
A cover letter describing the student’s commitment to journalism and social justice reporting
Up to five clips or up to a 10-minute reel demonstrating the student’s work
A letter of recommendation from a professor, mentor or current or former employer
Applications are due by Friday, May 1, 2020, and will be assessed by a member of the SPJ Madison board and two Cap Times editors. The scholarship funds will be distributed over the summer.
